Event details:

The Pattern Is Love: Sawali as Decolonial Futures Practice

Date: May 6, 2026
Time: 2pm EST
Cost: Free

What does love have to do with futuring? Bea Rodriguez-Fransen argues that Maternal Love—understood through Freire and hooks as educational and political commitment—is what sustains the long work of building liberatory futures. Drawing on the Filipino practice of sawali weaving, she demonstrates how patience, repair, and intergenerational knowledge-passing become methods for accountable, community-led worldmaking. Her Decolonial Design Futures Framework weaves together storytelling, reflection, imagination, and design justice into patterns of practice that honor non-linear time and collective care. Futuring, she suggests, is not imagination or strategy alone; it is love made actionable.

Event Speaker(s):

Dr. Bea Rodriguez-Fransen

Assistant Research Professor, Principled Innovation; Senior Global Futures Scholar | Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory

Dr. Bea Rodriguez-Fransen Assistant Research Professor in Principled Innovation at Arizona State University Global Futures Laboratory. She helps advance , integrating futures and anticipation, interdisciplinary integration, and public engagement across research and initiatives. Her 23-year career has taken her through nonprofits, higher education, local government, entrepreneurship, and innovation. What unites all of Dr. Rodriguez-Fransen's work is her deep belief that futures must be co-created by including those whose voices have been most excluded. In 2024, she was one of just 10 educators worldwide invited to speak at the TED World Theater in New York City. Her talk, inspired by concepts in her book, Education and Decolonial Futures in the Philippines, reminds us that education is not just about knowledge; it's about liberation, imagination, collaboration—all underpinned by love.
